The Ship to Shawano is the story of Markus Goethe, a 17-year old German soldier, who is shot and captured after the Allied invasion of Normandy. As with other Axis prisoners, he is shipped to a prison camp in the United States where the longing for loved ones and the Fatherland permeate life for the captives.

The Ship to Shawano M W Tyrrell 9781499757606 Books

Editing issues aside, this was a stellar book following a German POW's viewpoint from having been shipped to the USA as a captive, thru the remaining wartime and his eventual return to his homeland. Book had many poignant passages including "None of them saw the groundskeepers spit on the casket as they shoveled dirt back into the grave", "As tough as your lot in life might seem, there are people who have it worse" and "He had tried to pretend that he hadn't noticed her, first to avoid teasing from the others, and secondly, to protect himself from further pain". While a work of fiction, author had me engaged in the work from the start such that I truly felt for the protagonist and have since recommended my wife give it a read, too. Hopefully another book will be written by this author as I am going to add this one to my favorites!

I enjoyed this book.
Fresh, interesting and engaging. A very good short story.

A recommend read

Thanks to the author )
I gave a 4 star rating because of how the story brings to light how people often seek out each other when faced with circumstances and how those relationships bring us through more than we could have done ourselves.

Enemies in war time often have the same ways of dealing with the times and places they find themselves in as fellow comrades might have in this historical wartime account.
I enjoy this type of book for the history learned and the story itself. This story was well written and draws the reader into the lives of the German prisoners. I found myself concerned about Markkus and reading on to learn what happened to him and his fellow POWs next. Even found myself holding my breath a time or two.
The Ship to Shawano tells a side of World War II that most Americans are unaware of, though it brought the pain of war and parting here to our own shores. Tyrrell puts a human face to the other side, as he recounts the pain and uncertainty faced by a very young German soldier injured, taken prisoner of war, and sent to various scattered POW camps in America. A fictional account, this well-written story nevertheless shines a fresh light on a nearly forgotten piece of history.
I like the way this is written - and it provides a less-then-violent look at an aspect of WWII.
The typical German Soldier was NOT a Nazi and was not SS, etc - but simply young men, like those everywhere, doing what their duty was in a historical fashion (most western powers are/were built on military prowess).
Having grown up in a town that had a German camp during WWII, I appreciate the detail about the daily routine in the camps. Mr Tyrrell did a good job of bringing to light the good and bad reactions to the German POW's that surrounded all the camps. This is a well thought out story that hints of a retelling of family history. Nice job.
I really enjoyed this book. Got it because it was free, I found it hard to put down and was rooting for Markus all the way through the book. A little history and a big heart all rolled up in here. It does make you wonder and think about what some of these guys went thru. Thanks for the great read
